<blockquote><p>Hand chosen by the Devil himself, the pumpkin headed Jack embarks on a fun adventure that feels familiar yet refreshing</p></blockquote>
<p><em>Pumpkin Jack</em> is a 3D platformer that feels familiar and fresh, undoubtedly inspired by the likes of <em>MediEvil</em> and other classic platformers. The titular pumpkin headed warrior has been summoned by the Devil himself to stop mankind’s champion, a wizard, from thwarting his otherworldly invasion of earth via the curse of eternal night and the legions of his monsters that follow.</p>

<p>A joyful art direction and fun gameplay make for an enjoyable adventure full of nostalgia for fans of platforming classics.</p>

<h2>The Devil&#8217;s pumpkin</h2>
<p>This simple premise precedes an adventure that sees Stingy Jack, whose soul has been embedded inside a pumpkin atop a skeletal body, cutting down the devils army and human soldiers to stop the wizard at all costs. In return for his service, the Devil will forgive Jack for his sins committed against him.</p>
<p>The story of <em>Pumpkin Jack</em> is told in between each of the 6 levels in a fairy tale like format with narrated illustrations. Soon after the opening level begins, Jack is soon introduced to a crow that accompanied him throughout his journey. This crow regularly and amusingly chats with Jack through text based dialogue and can also be commanded to attack enemies.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2333" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_38_35-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_38_35-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_38_35-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_38_35-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_38_35-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_38_35-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_38_35-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Each level culminates with a boss battle, requiring the player to avoid a series of attacks before a window of opportunity presents itself for Jack to attack. After 3 cycles, each of which adds a new threat, the boss is defeated and the story progresses. These battles are fun, simple and varied and each boss is creatively and playfully designed.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2335" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_39_13-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_39_13-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_39_13-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_39_13-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_39_13-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_39_13-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_39_13-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>As somewhat of an anti-hero, Jack’s exploits and disposal of monsters and soldiers portray the wizard, mankind’s champion, as the villain. This is fun to see play out, particularly when Jack encounters arguably one of the greatest embodiments of all things good&#8230; Santa Claus.</p>
<p>Littered with self-aware humour, <em>Pumpkin Jack</em> is a light hearted adventure that is deviously fun. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and as a result the levity lends to a more casual and enjoyable experience that will keep a casual player busy for 3-4 hours.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2354" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_49_10-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_49_10-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_49_10-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_49_10-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_49_10-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_49_10-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_49_10-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<h2>New pumpkin, classic tricks</h2>
<p>The gameplay itself feels reminiscent of <em>MediEvil</em> from the PlayStation 1 era. Undoubtedly inspired by many of the great platformers of years gone by, <em>Pumpkin Jack</em> feels familiar in a playful way.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2357" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Screenshot-24_10_2020-2_48_10-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Screenshot-24_10_2020-2_48_10-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Screenshot-24_10_2020-2_48_10-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Screenshot-24_10_2020-2_48_10-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Screenshot-24_10_2020-2_48_10-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Screenshot-24_10_2020-2_48_10-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Screenshot-24_10_2020-2_48_10-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>The combat is restricted to a simple button and the player is able to jump and evade. As well as the ability to send the crow to unleash a single strike on enemies before a very brief recharge, the combat is simple and works well. With progression through the story, a total of 6 weapons are unlocked that can be switched between. Each feels unique and fun to use.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2345" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_43_55-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_43_55-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_43_55-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_43_55-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_43_55-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_43_55-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_43_55-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Health can be restored by defeating enemies, destroying objects in the environment such as boxes, barrels and tombstones or by drinking a green primordial stew from cauldrons that also act as the games checkpoint system.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2331" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_36_17-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_36_17-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_36_17-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_36_17-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_36_17-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_36_17-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_36_17-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>There are some pretty cool riding sections throughout the games’ 6 levels that include dangerous boat rides controlled by a grim reaper, galloping across a swamp on a supernatural horse and deadly roller-coaster style rides in a minecart. These are are such fun distractions that don’t overstay their welcome and highlight the decent size and design of each unique environment.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2340" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_42_21-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_42_21-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_42_21-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_42_21-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_42_21-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_42_21-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_42_21-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>As for the platforming itself, it relies on the typical jumping and climbing for the most part and despite the overall experience feeling inspired by classic games from the genre, it feels a lot smoother and more accurate. Throw in some light puzzle sequences for good measure and <em>Pumpkin Jack</em> feels like a complete and genuinely good 3D platformer.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2329" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_31_11-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_31_11-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_31_11-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_31_11-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_31_11-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_31_11-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_31_11-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>At predetermined times throughout each level, Jack is able to interact with a statue that leads to him removing his head so that it can travel through it to solve some sort of puzzle. Upon completion, Jack’s head returns to his body and he is able to progress.</p>
<p>These segments are absolutely reminiscent of <em>MediEvil</em> and is a feature I personally can’t recall in a title since though so it’s inclusion is certainly welcome and works within the context of the character.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2350" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_45_03-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_45_03-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_45_03-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_45_03-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_45_03-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_45_03-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_45_03-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Each of the 6 levels has 20 crow skulls to find which glow red and can only be picked up outside of combat. Within each level and the main menu itself the player is able to spend these on new skins that vary in cost.</p>
<p>To unlock all skins every crow in every level must be collected. The roaming merchant that appears in the levels has some very amusing and self-aware dialogue exchanges with Jack that were always a joy to witness.</p>

<p>As well as the crow skulls, each level also has a hidden gramophone that serves no purpose other than to have Jack unexpectedly burst into dance. It’s so wonderfully weird and confusing as to why but that makes it all the more enjoyable.</p>
<h2>A smashing pumpkin</h2>
<p>There is a playful charm to <em>Pumpkin Jack’s</em> entire presentation. The art design is so enjoyably creative and each level feels unique and inspired, including its fun enemy variety.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-2337" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_40_17-PM-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_40_17-PM-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_40_17-PM-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_40_17-PM-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_40_17-PM-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_40_17-PM-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Films-TV-24_10_2020-2_40_17-PM.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>The score is so perfect for the experience too, shifting with each new location and ranging from energetic and upbeat to slow and ominous and a haunting iteration of Christmas music was a real treat.</p>
<h2>Trick or Treat?</h2>
<p>It’s near impossible to comprehend that <em>Pumpkin Jack</em> was developed by solo developer <em>Nicolas Meyssonnier</em>. The overall presentation and mechanics are so well executed, despite not speaking a single word Jack feels like a meaningful character in a world that thrives on paying homage to classic titles while holding its own as a unique entry itself.</p>

<p><em>Pumpkin Jack</em> is fun and entertaining, an experience players of all ages can enjoy. Arriving just in time for Halloween, <em>Pumpkin Jack</em> is no trick. It’s a genuine treat.</p>

<p><em>Outbuddies</em><span data-contrast="auto"><em> DX</em> is a pixel art </span><span data-contrast="auto">metroidvania</span><span data-contrast="auto"> game that thrusts the player into the role of marine archaeologist Nikolay Bernstein after he encounters an epic storm that drags him 36,000 feet below the surface. <p><span data-contrast="auto">Developed by a single man in <em>Julian Laufer</em>, </span><em>Outbuddies</em><span data-contrast="auto"><em> DX</em> pairs the player with a drone named Buddy to play through and uncover the mysteries surrounding the Old Gods and the </span><span data-contrast="auto">Wozan</span><span data-contrast="auto"> enslaved by them. The player’s character wears a suit that is powered by steam with evasion techniques such as a dive roll that uses steam similar to energy, requiring a brief cool down before re-use. This dive roll can be used to evade enemy attacks that when used correctly will negate damage. Armed with a single gun at the beginning, the player’s arsenal expands with exploration, discovering new weapons and alternative fire upgrades that can be used on enemies to varying levels of effect.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1769" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob4-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob4-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob4-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob4-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob4-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob4.png 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">There are an assortment of enemies that inhabit this lost world; they range from piranha like fish that will swarm the player, flying fanged oddities that swoop if the player gets to close and a mixture of other ground based and wall climbing threats. The enemy designs are unique yet so abstract that is difficult to identify what they actually are.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1766" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob7-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob7-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob7-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob7-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob7-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob7.png 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Enemies are just as deadly to the player as environmental hazards that decorate the labyrinthine ancient city. Strategically placed spikes regularly present themselves underneath platforming situations such as raised platforms and rocks. The platforming itself can require precision execution and traps like spikes as a consequence for a mistimed jump become frustrating fast. Leaping to a wall and spring-boarding off of it is a mechanic that sounds so simple yet it wastes no time in becoming just of one of several trial and error mechanics that can aid a players to descent to madness.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">The drone that accompanies the player, Buddy, can be switched to control in order to assist with platforming and navigation. Buddy can be used in typical drone fashion to survey the area ahead, be it above, below or to the side and allow the player to see what threats may lay ahead. Alternatively, Buddy can move rocks with a telekinesis like ability to position it for the player to jump on and further progress through the room. This is a simple mechanic that feels like a missed opportunity as moving a rock seems very limited compared to the potential Buddy could otherwise serve such as further puzzle elements or even distracting or engaging nearby enemies.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1768" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob5-1024x576.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob5-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob5-300x169.jpg 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob5-768x432.jpg 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob5-50x28.jpg 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob5.jpg 1399w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Exploration will reward the player with new weapons and equipment such as the very useful Steam boots, allowing the player to jump higher, similar to a jet pack until the steam gauge depletes. The steam gauge is recharged quickly by maintaining contact with the ground. The player has access to a </span><span data-contrast="auto">map that is more daunting than helpful. Areas that have been explored are illuminated and decorated with various symbols to identify things that can be found or interacted with, some of which can only be done by backtracking with new equipment. </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">This game is massive in terms of these dungeon-like areas to explore; they themselves are not overly large or open though their verticality adds depth and frustrating platforming. It’s the sheer number of these that are overwhelming as there would easily be over 100 areas to explore and a good number of which unlockable only when specific weapons have been unlocked, which are needed to open the gates that react to the specific ammo. Luckily there are a handful of teleportation portals that can be activated to allow the player to transport to a corresponding portal across the map, that at least somewhat eases the tedium of backtracking.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1767" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob6-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob6-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob6-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob6-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob6-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob6-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob6.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">Hidden among the lost city are a handful of pretty epic boss encounters. These pit the player against large monsters that are almost Lovecraftian in their aesthetic. They look exciting and their assault is dynamic enough and varied from each encounter to present the player with a genuine challenge. Some of these are crushingly difficult and one in particular kept me trying for over an hour to work out how to defeat them before dying myself.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">The pixel art design is always something that catches my attention, there is something playful about this design approach that manages to remind me of titles from older console generations dating back to the Sega Mega Drive for instance. The wealth of dungeons all feel very similar though with the exception of some key locations where the mythology shines such as statue laden areas and those that </span><span data-contrast="auto">Wozan</span><span data-contrast="auto"> populate, these feel grand and provide a sense of marvel that the otherwise safe and repetitive cave-like areas fail to capture. A modern take in the genre that remains faithful to those that came before it, </span><em>Outbuddies</em><span data-contrast="auto"><em> DX</em> feels like its controls are as dated as its visuals which inescapably frustrates but feels very rewarding when difficult obstacles are overcome. The sound design is playful and appropriately retro inspired with the weapons and enemies providing nostalgic sounds that feel familiar.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1770" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob2-1024x576.jpeg" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob2-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob2-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob2-50x28.jpeg 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/ob2.jpeg 1399w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><span data-contrast="auto">The text-based dialogue contains profanity from the opening line so this alone shifts the intended audience to a mature age bracket. The game can be paused at any time and due to the difficulty of a number of sections, the player will likely take a breather and reassess their plan for tackling the situation at hand will likely use this feature often.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}"> </span></p>
<p><em>Outbuddies</em><span data-contrast="auto"><em> DX</em> is fun though frustrating and tedious but also rewarding with success. The retro approach provides a false sense of security in that given that it has released in 2020, its finicky controls and precision platforming feels like a title 20 years old. For </span><span data-contrast="auto">metroidvania</span><span data-contrast="auto"> fans that enjoy a challenge and are perhaps more experienced with this type of gameplay and timing, </span><em>Outbuddies</em><span data-contrast="auto"><em> DX</em> will appeal and provide a unique and interesting story to boot.
