<p>It was the worst day of Vasilisa’s life. Her husband commits suicide and is buried in unhallowed ground. Stepping into hell to become a koldun, a witch, Vasilisa sets out to fulfill a legend that states if she manages to break all seven seals of her mentor’s book, her loved one will return from the clutches of hell. <em><strong>Black Book</strong></em> has one hell of a dark premise and blends RPG elements with deck-building to create a unique and devilish cocktail to follow Vasalisa on her quest across the Russian countryside.</p>

<p>The story of <em>Black Book</em> plays out in an interesting manner, tasking the player with the likes of helping villagers and allowing them to decide how they end. These decisions have moral implications that are tallied up in a sins system that can be viewed at any time. Evil or divine, the choice is yours and the impact that has on the story is one that encourages replayability to experience the alternate paths based on your morality-driven actions and decisions.</p>
<p><em>Black Book</em> manages to establish a sense of loneliness through its haunting score, solemn story beats and endearingly dark art design. This is important to point out as companions and demons keep Vasilisa from rarely actually being alone. Companions come and go with side missions, temporarily joining Vasalisa to share their stories and offer special quests to uncover more about their pasts. It’s interestingly layered and it often manages to make the player forget that this is a card-based game at heart in terms of gameplay. It’s a very unique dynamic that it looks like one thing, plays like something else and feels like something different altogether. Developer <em>Morteshka</em> have created something special and unique and it’s the overall atmosphere that compels you to want to know more.</p>
<p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5755" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-6-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-6-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-6-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-6-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-6-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-6-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-6-50x28.png 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Breaking the seals will be no easy feat and to make things interesting, each is accompanied by a riddle. Each new seal adds new cards to the deck and with it, new possibilities in card battles become available to keep things fresh and dynamic with the 33 card deck the player can battle with. The combat in <em>Black Book</em> is similar to traditional card battler games but the added complexity and challenge that comes with progression, accompanied by the supernatural narrative bind it together in a way that feels truly unique.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5754" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/3-5-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/3-5-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/3-5-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/3-5-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/3-5-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/3-5-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/3-5-50x28.png 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Each turn the player can play a certain number of cards. Dealing damage, protecting yourself, crafting spells each turn that dependent of the sequence that compliment the others. It is surprisingly difficult to accurately describe the nature of the card combat in <em>Black Book</em>. It’s familiar enough in certain aspects to fans of the genre while putting its own spin in the right places to keep it fresh and engaging. Some cards benefit from being next to others while maintaining balance of the black and white cards has other effects. Scroll and Key slots can only be used by certain card types too. While I struggle to describe it Black Book’s card-based combat is comfortable to play without much issue and feels more familiar with experience.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5753" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-7-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-7-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-7-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-7-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-7-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-7-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-7.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Where <em>Black Book</em> over-complicates itself is by introducing cards with terms or descriptions the player has not yet encountered, creating difficult situations due to the lack of understanding to use them effectively. Boss battles seem to require your deck to be customised to capitalise on their weaknesses which aren’t always obvious without trial-and-error.</p>
<p>There are so many more layers to <em>Black Book</em> in terms of gameplay. It offers Choose Your Own Adventure type mechanics that heavily focus on the exploration of the world and fulfilling side quests with characters to interact with. There’s also sequences that test your knowledge or exploration of the Codex in your Black Book to find the required information. These can be very specific and difficult to complete if attention hasn’t been paid on an almost microscopic level.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5752" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-6-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-6-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-6-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-6-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-6-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-6-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-6-50x28.png 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>With plenty of side quests to complete it could easily take dozens of hours to fully complete everything <em>Black Book</em> has on offer. With the main story taking around 15 hours to complete the experience does begin to feel a little lengthy by the time the end is reached. It manages to inject enough new ideas to keep it feeling varied throughout though the point does arrive when it feels just a touch too long.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5751" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-5-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-5-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-5-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-5-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-5-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-5-50x28.png 50w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-5.png 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>The visual direction of <em>Black Book</em> is suspiciously charming given the sinister nature of the core story. It feels cute yet dark, playful yet solemn, it is an interesting dynamic that works in favour of the games many directions, narratively and on a gameplay level. The character designs are fun and appropriate of the approximately 19th century era it unfolds in. The sound design is just as competent, offering beautiful melodies and ominous themes throughout that work on all levels.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5750" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-7-1024x575.png" alt="" width="1024" height="575" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-7-1024x575.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-7-300x168.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-7-768x431.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-7-1536x862.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-7-2048x1149.png 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/7-7-50x28.png 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><em>Black Book</em> is a unique experience that combines a number of unique gameplay elements from different genres that work surprisingly well in unison. The fun art design, interesting story and varied gameplay keep things fun and fresh, avoiding a sense of repetition from creeping into the experience despite the length feeling a little overbearing towards the end.</p>

<h3>+ Interesting story</h3>
<h3>+ Compelling companions</h3>
<h3>+ Fun card-based gameplay when it becomes familiar</h3>
<h3>+ Varied genres and gameplay elements</h3>

<h3>&#8211; Learning curve may frustrate initially</h3>

<p>When an urban legend regarding the spirit of a young boy named Tsun, who died in a now-abandoned school building is played with, bad things happen to Ai, the young school girl protagonist of <em><strong>Yuoni</strong></em>. Played from the first person perspective, <em>Yuoni</em> is a ghastly game of hide and seek that tasks the player with navigating the old school building while avoiding spirits that will alert others of your presence if detected and draw the towering slender-man-esque spirit to stalk the player.</p>
<p>Sneaking, hiding and running for dear life when detected provide a far more challenging experience than anticipated and effectively establish a layer of fear that is ever-present.</p>

<p>The haunted halls of the abandoned school are oozing with creepy noises such as footsteps of the spiritual entities that roam, harrowing moaning and suddenly shutting doors. Atmospherically tense at all times, <em>Yuoni</em> clutches the player with its brooding setting, not unlike the spirits that grapple and batter the player upon detection. To avoid detection, the player can crouch to reduce the sound of their footsteps though not eliminate them entirely.</p>

<p>The player can also hold their breath while stationary or moving to further attempt to stay undetected though this consumes a breath bar that will eventually deplete, and Ai’s exhale will draw the attention of her spectral company. It is possible to increase the duration of the breath holding by spamming both bumpers simultaneously, decreasing the rate of depletion. The breath bar slowly replenishes automatically though a deep gasp can be performed to restore it rapidly but the sound from doing so will likely draw attention. Capitalising on hiding places such as lockers and under beds as safe spaces to do so are recommended though that still doesn’t guarantee a successfully stealthy replenishment.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5740" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-5-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-5-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-5-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-5-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-5-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-5-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/2-5-50x28.png 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Accompanying the breath meter is a stamina bar that drains when sprinting, which also creates a loud noise to draw Ai’s deadly foes to her location. Sprinting is best reserved as a measure of last resort when identified by a spirit, running, and attempting to break line of sight and sound by hiding in lockers. As the enemies are unable to see, their sharp attention to sound is how they seek the player out.</p>
<p>It is very easy to become disoriented in <em>Yuoni</em>, especially when being pursued while the player seeks a moment of respite to gather their breath, stamina, and wits. Avoiding interaction from the evil spirits that intend to kill Ai can often lead the player to backtrack inadvertently due to their sometimes-relentless pursuit. This can be frustrating as some enemies return to their stations while other variants continue to roam randomly.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5741" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-6-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-6-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-6-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-6-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-6-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-6-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/4-6-50x28.png 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>The way forwards is never clear and reaching the required door only to realise a key is required is painful and frustrating as backtracking often leads to death and having to restart from the last checkpoint. As the aim of each level is to find a doll and returning to the beginning area of the level to submerge it in water or burn it, remembering the way back is difficult given the number of instances players will likely encounter that require them to scramble and run in any direction that doesn’t have a spirit in front of them.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5743" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-1024x576.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-300x169.jpg 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-768x432.jpg 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/6-50x28.jpg 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>The effectively spooky sound design and ominous music always keep the atmospheric tension high and the dramatic and frantic escape attempts from the alerted spirits only amplify the tension. Visually, <em>Yuoni</em> is competent while failing to be particularly memorable outside of the design of the spirits and the ominous red glow of the sun peering in through the hazy windows.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-5742" src="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-5-1024x576.png" alt="" width="1024" height="576" srcset="https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-5-1024x576.png 1024w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-5-300x169.png 300w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-5-768x432.png 768w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-5-1536x864.png 1536w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-5-2048x1152.png 2048w, https://wangwebdesign-testsiteone.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/5-5-50x28.png 50w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p><em>Yuoni</em> is hard. For someone very experienced in survival, horror and first person hide and seek type experiences such as <em>Outlast</em>, I struggled getting through this. My constant failure to move through areas undetected is possibly my own fault though the AI of the more aggressive spirits can be difficult to escape, hide from and break line of sight and sound. <em>Yuoni</em> is enjoyably challenging until the repetition of repeated failure settles in and frustration takes over. <strong><em>Yuoni</em></strong> is a good horror fuelled hide and seek experience, it is just a difficult one that will test the patience of the player with repeated failure.</p>
