For over twenty years the Bratz franchise has maintained a solid foothold in the fashion doll space and has spawned a variety of media such as animated television shows, music releases, a live action film, extensive clothing and merchandise and of course, several video games.

Bratz: Flaunt Your Fashion is the latest video game adaptation of the fashion empire, bringing the original Bratz Pack of Yasmin, Cloe, Jade and Sasha on a single player adventure that takes them from Stilesville to Barcelona, Seoul and the Stylin’ Soirée.

The girls set out to catch the latest scoops for their Bratz Magazine while looking as stylish and trendy as the player sees fit. With dozens of clothing and makeup options to unlock, Bratz: Flaunt Your Fashion gives players the chance to let the Bratz Pack do just that.

Starting out in their hometown of Stilesville, players can select which of the four members of the Bratz Pack they want to play as. Cloe, Jade, Sasha and Yasmin all play the same way and offer no gameplay advantage over the other and can be switched out throughout the experience.

The Bratz Pack are more than fashion reporters and run into everyday people that need their help. These optional quests see the girls typically looking for items or talking to other characters to complete. They are short, sweet and simple, and reward the player with money to spend on new styles at the fashion stores throughout the game’s three explorable cities and style points that convert into social media following.

Stilesville introduces players to the map formula that continues on into Barcelona and Seoul. A total of five locations are available at each city with some only unlocking with story progression. The Apartment serves as the base of operations in each city and contains a wardrobe for players to customise their hats, glasses, tops, bottoms and shoes, as well as a vanity mirror to apply a variety of makeup styles. New style options are awarded for completing optional quests, opening chests found in the environment or bought from fashion stores. Customising their appearance is simple and keeps players and their chosen Brat looking stylish and fresh with the wide variety of options at their disposal.

Upon completion of some optional quests and most story quests, players need to interact with a computer in the Apartment to publish stories which converts their earned style points into social media followers, with certain numbers needing to be met in order to progress the story. New computers can be bought at tech stores which will significantly enhance the conversion rate of followers to make this much faster.

Aside from the Apartment, each city has a Mall location that is home to fashion stores, optional quests and a unique racing challenge and faster mobility tools such as a scooter, hoverboard and rollerblades. These can be rented with a one-off fee that lets the player get around the Mall much quicker and the optional racing challenge lets players test their speed and control.

The final location that all three cities share is the airport which lets players travel to the other cities once they have progressed the story. Once a new destination has been unlocked, the player is free to travel between them whenever they please.

With the three fixed locations of each city established, each one also has two unique locations that are related to events such as art exhibitions, extreme sports competitions and a fashion show that are tied to the main quest lines. Players can interact with characters at all of these locations, buy things and find chests as they work through the main and optional quest lines. The core gameplay is very simple, tasking players with simply interacting with people and objects. There are specific points scattered around every location where the player can take a photo, including selfies to unlock some additional style points.

At any time the player can access the map and fast travel to any unlocked location within the city or access their quest log to see where they are at with each of the main or optional quests they have taken on. A clues section is provided for the handful of quests that don’t give players the exact information of where to go or who to talk to. For instance, a clue may say what a character is wearing to help the player find them. It’s a simplistic system but it adds a little layer of thought to an otherwise straight-forward affair.

A handful of sequences function like quick time events such as dancing or singing by pressing the corresponding button with the events on screen. These are pretty simple and forgiving, with no consequence for failing to press them on time.

Bratz: Flaunt Your Fashion has a charming art design and funky soundtrack to keep the experience light and exciting for its younger target audience. Without having been exposed to much Bratz personally, a single frame of this title undeniably screams Bratz, and it’s that brand recognition that will feel so familiar and exciting to fans of Bratz in whatever capacity they’ve seen it in. Majority of the dialogue is presented as voice overs with minimal reading required which goes a long way in feeling more accessible to the youngest of players.

The simplistic gameplay, quest structure and customisation is an easy sell for young players. It does exactly what it needs to do for who it needs to. There is a good four-to-six hours worth of content on offer for players who want to seek out the optional quests and find all of the hidden chests and photo spots. Bratz: Flaunt Your Fashion ultimately delivers a casual gameplay experience that’s accessible, entertaining and surprisingly interesting for the quartet of fashion reporters.

Dragons are many things to different people. They are exciting mythological creatures that cover a broad spectrum of appeal that ranges from magical, fantastical presence to apex predators that epitomise challenging boss battles in a wealth of video games and even charming, almost pet-like lovability as found in countless films geared towards children. Perhaps the most notable franchise of the latter is DreamWorks’ Dragons and the numerous films and television series that have spawned since 2010’s animated hit How to Train Your Dragon.

DreamWorks Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms is based on the Dragons: Nine Realms animated series that launched last year and stars a quartet of lovable dragons to unlock and play through 25 stages, telling a simple yet touching story with Thunder at the heart of it. Thunder has lost his family and must embark on a dangerous journey through five realms to be reunited. With each new dragon that is unlocked comes their suite of unique abilities and move sets to add variety to this single player experience, offering the ability to freely switch between Thunder and his unlocked friends throughout each stage.

Light puzzle solving, combat and exploration for hidden secrets will keep players of all ages entertained as they strive to reunite Thunder with his family and upgrade their team of dragons along the way. Boasting the visual charm of the screen franchise, DreamWorks Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms is a faithful and genuine joy.

The story kicks off with the passing of a comet that upsets the natural balance of the Hidden World and unleashes a series of devastating tremors that separates Thunder from his family. Thunder is the hero of this tale and as such he is the first playable dragon that is introduced. As his name suggests, he possesses electric elemental abilities such as lighting strikes. The fire breathing Plowhorn, icy dual-headed Mist Twister Wu and Wei and sonic blasting Feathers are gradually introduced as playable dragons one at a time at the end of each realm. As with Thunder, they each bring their own elemental skills and combat to the playing field that are also required for unique elemental puzzles littered throughout each stage.

Told through narration and brief cinematics throughout each stage, the story unfolds at a steady pace that introduces new threats, friends, mechanics and challenges that keep it interesting and touching.

Spanning a total of 25 stages across five realms, each with five stages, the last of which is a boss battle, Thunder and friends can complete the adventure in around five-to-six hours.

Each new gameplay mechanic is cleverly covered via tutorials as they are introduced, the regularity of which is surprisingly generous, opening alternative ways to play and explore that prevents repetition from sinking its claws into the players experience.

Giant elemental crystal structures require activation at certain parts of each stage, colour coded and identifiable by the elemental symbol up close to easily assist the player with selecting the right dragon for the job. Thunder’s electricity activate the white crystals, Plowhorn’s fire triggers the red crystals, Wu and Wei use ice for blue crystals and Feathers sonic blasts the purple.

Along the way players will find small rocks that are decorated with the same coloured, elemental crystals that can be destroyed, rewarding the player with crystal shards that are required to upgrade skills for each dragon. Increased flight speed, evasion, damage output and other attributes can be unlocked for each dragon from the over-world at any time between stages. Defeating enemy dragons will also drop these shards, providing a regular flow to easily upgrade the dragons without asking the player to excessively grind.

Despite having unique elemental abilities and move sets, all dragons can fly at will to traverse gaping chasms, reach higher plateaus and gain combat advantages. The flying mechanics are simple to control and lend to a more playful dragon experience. Though flight is an essential part of progression through the stages there is not an overwhelming verticality to complicate things, rather the flight is capped at a few feet above the ground, eliminating any concerns over difficult exploration or a sense of getting lost. The low flying gameplay keeps the environment within view at all times and this is likely to feel more enjoyable for younger players and keep the way forward clear.

Each stage tasks the player with moving forward, activating giant crystals to open new pathways and a variety of enemies to defeat. They conclude by finding an enormous white crystal structure. There is an additional orange crystal structure hidden off the beaten track to find that unlocks the Challenge mode for each stage and these can often only be accessible by replaying the stage with new dragons in the team. The Challenge mode of the stages are more difficult and offer the orange crystal shards in greater quantity which are essential for fully upgrade each of the dragons. As this suggests, each stage is replayable at any time from the over-world, even stages where the later introduced dragons were initially absent.

The five explorable realms each introduce new enemy variants and associated elemental abilities that must be taken into account. Plowhorn’s fire attacks do more damage to an ice type enemy for example while doing less damage against other fire types. This approach keeps combat encounters from being stale, hack and slash type affairs and encourages understanding the strength and weaknesses of each of the four playable dragons. If one of the players dragons is low on health or defeated they can be switched out to allow their health to regenerate. Team management is as simple as a press of a button on the D-Pad (Directional Pad) and health regeneration is generous, restoring dragons to full health in a matter of seconds.

Jumping, flying, evading, shooting elemental attacks and a light and heavy melee combat system full of combos is simple to learn, understand and balance. The difficulty of combat encounters is pretty generous and won’t punish younger players in particular. At various times throughout the stages a white barrier will enclose the field and a certain number of enemies need to be defeated in order for it to drop and allow the player to progress. These little arena sequences offer the most action as majority of the other enemy encounters can actually be avoided by simply flying past and ignoring them.

Matching the visual style and charm of its film and series counterparts breathes familiar and accessible life into the title that will allow the youngest of players to make a stronger connection to the source material. Each of the five realms feels visually distinct and the enemy variants are cleverly tailored to incorporate the unique surroundings.

Developer Aheartfulofgames have cleverly crafted the experience to hit the nostalgic chords and deliver an approachable adaptation to the beloved franchise. The sound design is fun and endearing, delivering a score full of moments of tension and triumph that aren’t overly dramatic or mature.

Outright Games have once again added a strong licenced adventure geared towards a younger audience to their publishing portfolio, further solidifying their position as the leading publisher of broad and oftentimes unexpected licences that manage to entertain older players in the process. An opportunity was perhaps missed to include local co-operative play and bring the family together but as a single player experience it still caters to a broader audience of the franchise.

DreamWorks Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms is a genuine treat for those who have watched the animated series it ties into while also standing on its own as a self contained adventure the whole family can enjoy.

The post REVIEW – DreamWorks Dragons: Legends of the Nine Realms first appeared on Games of DAYNE.

Set in the world of the hit Nickelodeon animated series, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is a race against time for the crew of the USS Protostar to repair their ship and rescue their friends before the system is destroyed by a supernova.

With stakes as high as this, Dal R’El and Gwyndala must overcome every enemy, obstacle and puzzle as if their very lives depend on it. Armed with a unique array of melee and ranged weapons to keep them feeling distinct, players can freely switch between Dal and Gwyn, or play co-operatively via local split-screen.

With plenty of puzzles to solve, secrets to find and enemies to destroy, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova follows the footsteps of its on-screen companion, Star Trek Prodigy, bringing the near 60 year franchise to a younger audience.

It is worth noting that despite being in my early thirties, I personally have never seen a single episode or film from the Star Trek franchise. Fortunately, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova does not punish me for this, so players in the same camp can rest assured that they do not have to know what a Klingon is or means.

On the flip side, Supernova does expect you to be familiar with the Star Trek Prodigy animated series as it almost immediately starts referencing characters and events via dialogue that are not explained in-game. Without spoiling anything, the family background of one character is discussed as though the player knows who the other characters being mentioned are, as well as their affiliations, and this takes place in the very first mission of the game.

This leads to story and character moments that don’t have the context or weight to a newcomer as they may have for viewers of the animated show. While Supernova tells a self-contained story that feels like it has a genuine beginning, middle and an end, it does so by referencing events outside of the experience of the game itself which undeniably strips away moments of significance.

Playable solo or co-operatively with one other player via local split-screen, players embark on an adventure comprised of twelve missions spread across three planets. Each planet is visually distinct and does a great job in establishing its own tone and identity when taking on the four missions attached to it.

Supernova gradually introduces new concepts and gameplay mechanics at an accessible rate. Combat is simple, tied to a melee strike and ranged attacks. With story progression players will unlock upgrades that can be purchased with crystals that are found throughout every mission. These upgrades are tied to increased stats and performance for each characters arsenal.

Traversal is very simple, players can run around and use a dash manoeuvre to cross small gaps or can interact with certain ledges to climb platforms. Coupled with the simplistic combat system, the general gameplay mechanics of Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova are fairly accessible but the depth may not satisfy older, more experienced players in the same way.

Melee combat is tied to a singular button while ranged combat is tied to a trigger. These ranged attacks will slowly fill an overheat bar that decreases automatically when ranged weapons aren’t used in quick succession and if the weapons do overheat, a brief cool-down will occur before it can be used again.

The enemy forces that will swarm Dal and Gwyn are known as Watchers, and they are represented by a variety of variants that each attack in unique ways. Some are melee focused while others are ranged, have powerful lasers, perform charged attacks, explode upon defeat and damage anything within a short radius or have healing areas that regenerate health for anything in close proximity. Various visual indicators and cues can be observed to understand the attack patterns and learn which Watcher performs which type of attack. If Dal or Gwyn take too much damage, they will need to be revived by the other with a simple button prompt.

Gwyn is more proficient with melee combat and can perform charged melee attacks that Dal can’t. Outside of combat Gwyn can create bridges with her melee weapon at specific places that Dal can climb on and cross, she can block laser beams, interrupting them and allowing Dal to pass behind her without taking damage.

Dal is more skilled in ranged combat and is able to shoot longer before his weapon overheats. Like Gwyn, Dal has unique abilities outside of combat. Dal is able to lift debris that Gwyn can crawl under and he is also able to activate his chameleon ability to turn invisible and avoid motion detectors.

For both Dal and Gwyn, their non-combat abilities are essential for story progression and solving puzzles. They are simple to understand, execute and identify when and where they are required.

If the player needs a hint of what direction their objective is they are able to use the Tricorder by simply tapping the left trigger. This highlights important objects and indicates the path with a waypoint. When there are paths present that go in a direction different to the Tricorder, this could either be a path that will become accessible later or simply an alternate path full of secrets or collectibles such as the Punnies, bunny-like alien creatures, plants or relics.

Each mission has a combination of Punnies, plants and relics to find and collect, some can only be accessed by using abilities of crew members not unlocked until later missions, meaning these missions will need to be replayed later.

Environmental puzzle solving is introduced in the opening mission and is increasingly relied upon to extend the length of missions with story progression. An assortment of puzzles and components are gradually introduced such as interacting with power cubes to power up cables and doors or power down by removing them, using switches to direct the flow of power and moving large boxes to shift the flow of a light beam to open doors and deactivate light gates for instance.

Initially the puzzles are pretty simple and short but as the game gets deeper they become increasingly longer and more complicated. Repetition sets in all too fast with the puzzles and it very quickly becomes apparent that solving puzzles dominates the core gameplay. Early missions take about 25 to 30 minutes to fully explore while later missions can take 40 plus. The missions feel unnecessarily bloated by puzzles and unfortunately this feeling sets in very early. The frequency, length and complexity of the puzzles and lack of a hint system I feel are likely to alienate younger players, possibly being too difficult for some and since they are tied to story progression, I worry this may prevent some players from even finishing the story.

At the end of each mission the player can be awarded up to three badges based on their performance in certain aspects. A Time Badge is awarded for completing the missions within a certain time frame, a KO Badge is awarded for finishing the mission by being knocked out less than a defined amount of times and finally a Mineral Badge for collecting a specified amount of crystals. Unfortunately, the badge requirements are only shown at the end of the mission and can’t be viewed again in any way before, during or outside of a mission with the sole exception of at the very end of that mission. Completionists in particular will have a tough time managing thorough exploration within a time limit they can not see. Collecting all of a particular Bade type are cheats which may incentivise players and make any subsequent playthroughs a little easier.

As the story progresses, four members of the Protostar crew are individually rescued. These members can perform unique interactions at certain parts of missions, encouraging replayability by revisiting earlier missions where these characters were not unlocked but their skills are required. As with all four of the rescuable crew members, they each offer a unique way to reach previously inaccessible areas and have a unique combat ability that can be triggered such as increased damage output or damaging enemies over time.

Dal and Gwyn can each select an ally ability to trigger at the start of each mission, either the ability activated upon any melee or ranges attack after filling a meter that is powered simply by inflicting enemy damage. The effectiveness of these ally abilities can be improved by completing up to two unique crew missions that can be accessed in the Protostar in between missions.

With a visual direction that serves as a faithful companion to the animated series that this game takes place in, Supernova has a charming visual identity that can be immediately associated by fans of the show. For newcomers, there is still a general Star Trek vibe that is given off by the characters and world design that playfully says “this is Star Trek”.

The score does a surprisingly excellent job at shifting tones and establishing themes of wonder, tension and drama. Playful sound design keeps the sci-fi elements ever present during combat and exploration.

Tessera Studios have done a great job developing Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova in a manner that is visually similar to the animated series that it takes place in. The story is interesting, even for a player who is not familiar with Star Trek but for players who haven’t seen the animated Star Trek Prodigy series however, there are story elements, mostly on a character level, that are referenced and seemingly important but are never explored or explained in depth during the actual game.

The increasing reliance, length, complexity and frequency of the puzzles very quickly eliminates any sense of pacing and creates a frustrating experience that unfortunately gives the game overall a sense of overstaying its welcome. If the puzzles were dialled back and less prominent, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova could shine a lot brighter.

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova

Based on the animated series that launched at the beginning of the year on Paramount+, Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova aims to recruit the next generation into the Star Trek universe in a playful, intergalactic adventure that takes six alien teenagers on a quest for hope and salvation.

Playing as Dal R’El and Gwyndala, either solo or co-operatively, to race against time before supernova destroys everything, puzzles, robot showdowns and more await the heroes as they set out to save their friends. The alien worlds of Orisi, Mires and Taresse each offer up their own unique challenges and mysteries, containing iconic trinkets from the Star Trek franchise to customise the Protostar.

As someone who has made it 31 years without having seen anything Star Trek related with the exception of the animated series that has inspired this title, I am definitely looking forward to entering the fandom with this action packed adventure.

DC Justice League Game from Outright Games (final name to be revealed)

Undoubtedly the highlight of the first ever digital showcase from Outright Games was the bombshell announcement of an upcoming Justice League title. While only the briefest of teasers was shown for the action adventure titles from PHL Collective, it’s safe to say this is one to keep our eyes on as more comes to light in the future ahead of its release next year.

With an exciting back catalogue and a seemingly never-ending slate of exciting announcements such as these, the legendary publisher is poised to continue to win the hearts of our youngest players with big-name franchises that some of us have grown up with for decades or have only been introduced to as we grow with our children.

OG Unwrapped 2022 was massive and a exciting debut into the digital showcase space that delivered reveals big and small that undeniably appeal to the broadest range of players. Outright Games have given us a host of things to look forward to over the next 12 months that I personally can’t wait to share with my children.

From the very beginning of My Friend Peppa Pig it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between this video game and the uber-popular children’s animated series. Presented as an open adventure that doesn’t force the player in any one direction the wide variety of activities and interactions is largely available immediately. Aside from a handful of story driven cinematic and associated events the interactive experience is presented in a manner that truly represents player freedom and exploration at their own pace.

Opening with a fun character creation suite, the player is able to choose from a variety of different animals, body shapes, fur and clothing colours and accessories. The nameless player character is simply referred to as Peppa’s friend and accompanies Peppa and her family to a handful of locations full of things to playfully interact with.

My Friend Peppa Pig uses single button controls to make the entire experience as easy as possible. Interacting with the many points of interest is as accessible as a result and leans into the pressure-less exploration approach cleverly adopted by developer Petoons Studio. Peppa frequently suggests things the player can do but these don’t need to be followed, rather they exist to help the player push the story forward but not at the expense of the player’s freedom to explore at their will.

Beginning in Peppa’s house the adventure spreads out to a museum, Windy Castle, the playgroup, Peppa’s grandparents house and Potato City to name a few. These locations are all teaming with characters and objects to interact with, all of them wonderfully brought to life with a vibrant colour pallet that keeps the experience bright and playful at all times.

Drawing pictures at the playgroup, skiing down the slopes of Snowy Mountain and playing dress-up with Peppa’s toy-box are just a few examples of the types of interactions these locations offer. These aren’t tied to objectives, again reinforcing the idea that My Friend Peppa Pig is more focused on exploration, interaction and in some cases education.

The simplistic approach to the gameplay, storytelling and interactions truly sets this title apart as one of the most accessible games for the youngest of players set in the world of one of the most beloved children’s television shows of all time.

While exploring the various available locations the player may be tasked with optional objectives such as finding Daddy Pig’s missing glasses, catching chickens, planting seeds and retrieving Peppa’s brothers lost dinosaur toy. Any objective presented is entirely optional but if the player does choose to undertake them, they are all very simple and can be found in very close proximity to where the task was given.

With so much to do and explore, My Friend Peppa Pig doesn’t restrict replayability. The activities can be replayed multiple times  locations can be travelled to at will. A downside to the optional repetition of things is the inability to skip scenes previously viewed. One in particular is a few minutes long, travelling to Windy Castle with Peppa’s family. While little ones may want to go back they may not be as fond of hearing the same unskippable dialogue and scenes played every time.

Given the highly interactive and simple approach to the gameplay, it feels less like a video game in the traditional sense. The narration and voice acting is authentic to the presentation of the TV show, maintaining the illusion that My Friend Peppa Pig is essentially an interactive episode. As such this may be less appealing to players outside of the target audience though as it has been developed with the youngest audience in mind, this does not detract from the experience.

My Friend Peppa Pig is an excellent example of how to introduce video games to the youngest of players. The high level of interaction, educational sequences and freedom to explore at the players pace is fun, simple and accessible. Peppa Pig is the perfect playground for the next generation of video game players to dip their toes into. Full of charm, playful energy and an authentic presentation, there’s plenty to keep the kids coming back for more to further explore the world of the TV sensation.

Catboy, Owlette and Gekko make the heroic leap from the PJ Masks animated television series to video game adaptation in PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night. Featuring eight locations such as the city, park, mountains and even the moon across 16 stages, the mighty pyjama suit-wearing mini heroes bring their powers and their wits to thwart the dastardly plans of Romeo, Luna Girl and Night Ninja.

With collectibles to find, obstacles to overcome and baddies to stop, the PJ Masks need our help to go into the night to save the day!

Each of the 16 stages open with a vehicle based sequence that tasks players with simply avoiding obstacles and collecting optional glowing gems. Driving, flying or navigating underwater trenches is simple and there are no ways to fail these sequences, or any part of a stage for that matter.

With no health bars, no gaps to fall in to or any form of combat, PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night is all about accessibility throughout the adventure. This approach allows the youngest of players to be able to enjoy the experience without the pressures of defeat.

Once the initial vehicle sequence has been completed each of the three PJ Masks take turns as the playable character throughout every stage. Making each of three heroes playable in each stage goes a long way in establishing a more balanced connection to the game for fans of the animated series.

Certain sections of each stage call upon the player to use special abilities by correctly selecting the character appropriate symbol that is displayed on screen. Catboy has super speed which can be used to bypass electric fences and for instance, Owlette can use her wings to blow smoke out of the way and Gekko can turn invisible to avoid detection and bypass threats.

Catboy brings a double-jump ability to the table that allows him to reach higher platforms, Owlette can use her wings to fly through predetermined sections of levels and Gekko can crawl up or down walls.

Each of these abilities are particularly useful for players looking to collect the 200 gems present in each stage and the three amulets that are hidden for each character. Collecting these awards a statue upon completion of the stage with Bronze, Silver and Gold rankings awarded based on the number collected.

Alternating the playable characters throughout each stage is a great way to introduce alternating mechanics to keep the gameplay exciting for younger players throughout the 10-15 minutes each stage will take to complete if exploring for all of the collectibles. The brevity and simplicity of the missions makes PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night accessible and easy to play in shorter sessions.

The end of each mission brings the PJ Masks face to face with the baddies in a confrontation that requires each of the characters to unleash an attack based on the singular on screen prompt for each hero. In line with the remainder of the experience there is no way to fail these sequences, rather the player is able to retry until they press the correct button.

PJ Masks: Heroes of the Nights serves as a playful introduction to the side-scrolling platformer genre for younger players and the implementation of basic driving/flying sequences are a great way to ease them into multi-genre experiences.

The visuals are a charming and faithful representation of the animated series this title is adapted from. From the characters, environmental art direction and stage design the 16 stages feel authentic and light in tone, and with the accompanying energetic score and frequent control dialogue the overall presentation is very beginner friendly and accessible to the target audience.

PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night has been developed with the youngest of players in mind and is a great adaptation of the animated series they will likely be familiar with. It’s fun, simple and charming, introducing basic ideas and genre elements into a light tale of good guys and bad guys that avoids any overly sinister tones or themes that may alienate young players.

Blaze and the Monster Machines have been tearing it up for 7 years as a Nickelodeon television series and now Blaze and the gang have finally raced onto consoles and PC in Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers.

Featuring eight characters from the show to race as, Blaze and friends take to the track in an extremely family friendly racer with accessibility options to allow even the youngest of players to enjoy the fast and chaotic nature of the races.

The game opens with a brief tutorial that explains the gameplay and introduces the mechanics such as boost pads and the unique skills that each of the characters possess.

After learning the basics the player is free to choose from any of the three game modes to play in.

• Quick Race – Custom Race, Random Race, Random Championship and Tutorial sub-modes are available
• • Custom Race allows players to choose from the 10 available tracks from the 4 locations, set the race to be between 1 to 5 laps and either Easy, Medium or Hard difficulty
  • Random Race will choose a track at random and allow the player to select a difficulty
  • Random Championship will place players in one of the three championship series’, consisting of 3 laps each
  • Tutorial will let players revisit the opening tutorial mode to refresh their memories if necessary

• Play with Friends – Custom Race, Random Race and Random Championship sub-modes are available, each with the respective settings as mentioned above for Quick Races. Up to 4 players can compete against each other in local multiplayer

• Adventure – This mode is the equivalent of a campaign or career. Three Championships, each consisting of three 3-lap races are available as well as a final 5 lap event.

Regardless of the game mode, players can choose from the eight playable characters. Each of their unique skills are fun to experiment with such as Blaze’s turbo ability, Pickle’s shield to protect him from projectiles or traps and Crusher’s earthquake ability that slows down the other racers. The action on track is playful and friendly for younger players, not to mention fun!

Wrenches concealed inside green orbs are littered throughout the track and players need to collect 10 of them to access their characters unique skill. There is a very generous amount in each instance, allowing multiple players to pick a few up each time. Using the drift feature is a great way to collect multiple at once and successful drift also award the player with a brief speed boost to gain the edge over the competition.

The races are all relatively short which is great for younger players who don’t necessarily have the attention span for longer races, experience with racing games and to help keep the young one’s play sessions tight. One of the greatest features in this title is the inclusion of auto-driving. Players can simply access the pause screen and with the tap of a single button, they can activate the feature which automatically accelerates and steers, though players can still steer while the feature is active if they wish.

The simplicity of the gameplay is great for younger players as the core gameplay consists only accelerating, braking, drifting and using the skills. It is easy enough for them to pick-up and play and enjoyable enough to entertain older players or parents who may be sharing the experience with them.

Beautifully faithful to the art direction of the hit television series, Axle City Racers looks and feels like the show. The environments are bright, colourful and charming and the characters are just as vibrant and endearing. There is joy to these types of experiences that are aimed at younger players that are inescapably joyful to its entire audience, regardless of age. The playful chaos that each of the character’s skills bring to the racetrack keep each race entertaining and fun.

Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers is a fun little kart-racer that is wonderfully charming to look at and offers such great accessibility options that the youngest of players can enjoy without the pressures of complex controls. It’s simple, it’s fun and the competitive local co-op should inspire some fun competition between the whole family. With accessibility in mind, and some fun educational facts that serve as the load screens, this title doesn’t overcomplicate anything and that’s what helps it stand out in the kart racing genre as more than just a licensed title.

The Addams Family has had a presence in various multimedia platforms since its creation in 1938. A number of television series and feature films, both live action and animated, have been accompanied by books and even musicals. A few video game adaptations have spawned since 1989 and the latest is The Addams Family: Mansion Mayhem, inspired by the most recent animated film and its upcoming sequel.

Supporting up to 4 players in local co-op, players can assume the iconic roles of Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday and Pugsley, the father, mother, daughter and son respectively. Filled with puzzles, spooky monsters and creepy world design, Mansion Mayhem is a family friendly blend of monsters and platforming that players of all ages can enjoy.

There are four worlds to explore, all within the family’s mansion. The Dining Room, Graveyard, Music Room and Laboratory worlds each contain 6 levels and 3 mini games, all of them taking place in unique sections of their respective worlds. This offers up a variety of quirky, spooky and joyful playgrounds rife with monsters to defeat, platforming sections and clever, yet simple puzzles to solve. The unique monster designs for each world offer a fun variety of spooky foes to vanquish that helps the playful world design feel even more varied.

The player is able to choose which of the four characters they want to play as at any time by returning to the main menu, though character selection is merely a cosmetic choice as none of the characters have unique abilities or perks to help them play or feel different to one another, they all move at the same pace and jump the same height for instance.

Each of the levels can be completed by simply reaching a portal at the end. Along the way there are plenty of enemies to defeat which can be done by bumping into them or by utilising one of the four special abilities that are triggered at specific parts of the levels.

The Mazurka Sabre can be used to hack and also through enemies and objects in the environment, the latter typically revealing coins called Doubloons to be collected.

The Longlegs Launcher is the equivalent of a web-shooter, not unlike Spider-man’s ability, that can be used to shoot web at enemies or objects and drag them around the environment, commonly used to solve puzzles featuring pressure plates. A web-swing-like ability can also be used to attach to hooks and swing across gaps or avoid environmental hazards such as electricity and fire.

The Big Bomb is a fun one to experiment with, spawning a bomb beneath the feet of the player, letting them roll around freely on the bomb and crashing into enemies or objects to destroy them. As with the Longlegs Launcher this is required to solve some puzzles.

Finally, the Beak Blotter is a clone of Socrates, the octopus friend of Wednesday. Socrates sits on the players shoulder and squirt a stream of ink directly in front or, when jumping, shoots downwards to simulate a jetpack to cross gaps and solve puzzles.

These abilities are introduced one at a time upon entry two a new world, with different parts of the levels swiping what abilities come into play.

Most monsters can be defeated in a single attack but some larger enemies take a few hits to take down, keeping the combat aspect of Mansion Mayhem simple and accessible. Aside from monsters, there are 3 optional objectives in each level, and one per mini game, that each award a Family Crest when the criteria is met.

These are displayed at the beginning of the level and are fairly simple tasks such as collecting X amount of Doubloons, of which there are far more available than actually required, and finding and solving brief puzzles. While unlocking all 84 of these is completely optional, a total of 55 are required to unlock the final mini game, with each new level requiring a certain amount to access. These are fairly low requirements as most will be found fairly naturally with a little exploration.

One of the more fun elements of Mansion Mayhem are the mini games, all of which are completely unique, and a lot more fun in local multiplayer due to the competitive nature of trying to achieve the highest score while disrupting the other players from trying to win. These vary from on-rails type sequences that put the player on a raft trying to collect stars, or a pin-ball type machine played with a bomb. They are fun, visually interesting and short enough to avoid feeling repetitious.

The playful art design is inspired by the most recent animated film and its upcoming sequel and the style translates well into this video game adaptation. The monsters are creepy without being scary, the world is twisted enough without being gross and overall it just manages to make a spooky world look and feel fun, especially for younger players.

The score is appropriately light and charmingly spooky and the sound effects are pretty impressive considering the younger audience this title is intended for. Enough attention to detail has been paid to appeal to its mature player base too which is a thoughtful consideration of developer PHL Collective.

The Addams Family: Mansion Mayhem presents a fun and charming variety of levels, worlds and mini games to entertain players of all ages that can be enjoyed alone or with up to three other players, whether they choose to play through the story or just play the mini games against each other. Fans of the franchise and newcomers alike have a lot to enjoy here and being able to play as a family is as authentic of an Addams Family experience one could hope for.

For those unfamiliar with Outright Games, they have playfully dominated the licenced and family friendly title space in recent years with a publishing catalogue of some of the most beloved franchises in children’s television. Titles such as Adventure Time, Ben 10, PAW Patrol, Gigantosaurus, Trollhunters and Ice Age are just the tip of their publishing iceberg. YouTube child sensation Ryan from Ryan’s World, the recent iterations of Jumanji and even the iconic Transformers also have the Outright Games stamp in recent years.

Outright Games have curated a portfolio of powerhouse licences that have been adapted into experiences that can be enjoyed and made accessible to younger players while also remaining enjoyable for parents or older players. The first word that comes to mind when I think of Outright Games is ‘family’, and by publishing titles that in most cases can be played co-operatively, are inspired by beloved franchises and are developed with the most casual of accessibility and gameplay options, these titles offer a little of something to everyone.

PAW Patrol the Movie: Adventure City Calls

This is the only title of the showcase that has released, albeit recently. It is a tie-in of the film PAW Patrol: The Movie that released in cinemas August 21. This marked the third PAW Patrol title to be published by Outright Games and was developed by Drakhar Studio, who also published the previous entry, PAW Patrol: Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay.

Drakhar Studio are also developing the upcoming Hotel Transylvania: Scary-Tale Adventures, to be published by Outright Games, which was absent from this presentation.

The Addams Family: Mansion Mayhem

This title is a 3D platforming adventure full of exciting minigames that can be played alone or co-operatively with up to three other players, each taking the role of Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley and Wednesday.

3D Clouds are no strangers to developing titles to be published by Outright Games. The development team are responsible for 2019’s Race with Ryan and are also developing Fast & Furious Spy Racer: Rise of SH1FT3R.

PJ Masks: Heroes of the Night

Fast & Furious Spy Racers: Rise of SH1FT3R

This was the only title in the show that was hands-off, with the game being showcased with commentary and a Q&A from members of Swipe Right, Outright Games and the development team from 3D Clouds.

Inspired by the animated Netflix series, Fast & Furious Spy Racers, Rise of SH1FT3R exhumes a visual flair and engaging style that is certain to appeal for audiences of all ages.

3D Clouds are also developing the upcoming Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers.

This was my first digital showcase and I couldn’t be happier that it was one for Outright Games. Their catalogue of titles are yet to disappoint, even as a 30 year old player, each one has managed to trigger the child within that still enjoys the simple, accessible and relaxing experiences Outright Games can deliver. As I have introduced my 3 and 5 year old sons, Hunter and Lachlan, to video games, these titles are fast becoming a staple at Games of DAYNE HQ, offering a vast array of family-friendly experiences that we can share together, either playing co-operatively, taking turns, or watching each other.

As a father, I can’t stress enough how great the value of titles published by Outright Games are in terms of fun and simple experiences for the kids. With almost every title recognisable with their television counterparts, most available on Netflix or other accessible streaming services, these are great gateway gaming introductions.

As a 3o year old gamer, I am still pleasantly surprised with how much I am able to enjoy these games. There’s something so relaxing and enjoyable about being able to kick back, switch off a little bit and simply play a game that isn’t constantly asking me to react with instinct or challenge me in some capacity. The Xbox Achievement Hunter in me also enjoys the achievement lists as they aren’t remotely taxing or time-consuming.

Outright Games tick the children, parent, gamer and Achievement/Trophy hunter boxes with flying colours. With the great experiences I’ve had in the past and present, and with the opportunity to play some of what’s to come in the very near future, I can’t wait to play the titles from this event in full and I’m even more excited for the surprises that are inevitably cooking away.

To coincide with the cinematic release of PAW Patrol the Movie, a tie-in title has been developed by Drakhar Studio and published by licenced title powerhouse Outright Games. PAW Patrol the Movie: Adventure City Calls features locations from the big screen adventure as Ryder and the PAW Patrol team discover that Mayor Humdinger is up to no good and only their mighty efforts can save the day.

Featuring eight story missions and over forty mini-game missions that span four different game modes, PAW Patrol the Movie: Adventure City Calls offers hours of entertainment for players of all ages to enjoy solo or in local couch co-op. It’s a PAWfect family experience!

The 3D platforming adventure plays like a combination of a side-scroller and light platformer, offering an assortment of mini-games that utilise the unique abilities of each of the eight playable pups of the PAW Patrol. Two pre-determined pups take the stage of each of the eight missions and can be switched between at will if playing solo or controlled by a player each in local couch co-op.

Each of the eight missions have been carefully designed to be accessible to younger players. Aside from movement the only other control for most of the gameplay is the ability to jump. At a handful of sections in each mission there is a PAW Interaction which requires a specific pup to activate and use their unique ability to play a very brief mini game. For instance, Rubble can drill through rocks or swing a wrecking ball, Marshall can put out fires with his fire truck and Chase can use a grappling hook or zip line to reach new areas.

These are very simple sequences that have a brief tutorial before every instance to remind younger players how to complete them. Some missions have driving, flying, or swimming sequences which offer fun variety and keep the simplistic experience diverse enough to remain engaging and capture the interest of young players. Hundreds of pup treats litter the screen of each mission, as well as three badges to collect, to give players something to focus on as they push forward. Collecting these awards character cards and other things that can be checked out in the Extras section of the main menu, further providing a fun distraction for fans of the PAW Patrol gang.

Completing all eight story missions can take as little as two hours, approximately 10-15 minutes each if attempting to collect all of the treats and badges. As that is from the perspective of a 30-year-old father somewhat experienced in video games, it is easy to understand that each mission could take twice as long for the youngest of PAWsome players. Considering the wealth of mini games available outside of the main story, an experienced player can have everything completed in around four hours but again, young players have countless hours of replayable fun ahead of them.

There are four types of mini games to enjoy;

• Time Trials – Three vehicle challenges are available for each of the seven pups. These task the player with simply completing the trial while collecting as many pup treats as possible. Only three Time Trials are played as the pups themselves and follow the same structure

• Collect them All – These challenges can only be completed by collecting all of the pup treats in the level

• Obstacle Course – A number of checkpoints are scattered around each of the nine obstacle courses that players will need to run and jump around to collect, returning to the finish line before time expires

• Pup Boogie – Following a simplified rhythm game structure players need to press the corresponding button as it reaches the green zone, increasing their score and multiplier with successive hits in these three challenges

There are some fun and thoughtful, yet subtle inclusions that make the experience even more suitable for a younger audience. Considerations such as pups only being able to cross a road at marked pedestrian crossings and any cars coming from either side stopping for them to do so is a great way to remind young players of road safety while enjoying a video game. This may seem like a no-brainer to older players as they play through but there is no such thing as bringing too much attention to the importance of these observations to children.

Some features that may be easier to overlook for younger players such as in-game tracking for collectibles in the main missions and side-missions would be nice to have for older players but as the experience is geared towards a younger audience, it would be unfair to use these as criticisms against the title though to ignore mentioning them would be a disservice to the mature audience that read this review or play the game.

Visually, the experience is a faithful 3D adaptation of the beloved kids TV series, and the character design and environments are playful and charming, bright, and colourful and are wonderfully complimented by a very fun, energetic, and upbeat soundtrack. Drakhar Studio have absolutely nailed the presentation and feel of the PAW Patrol world. The only thing missing is any voiceovers for the pups, Ryder has the only speaking role in the game before, during and after missions.

PAW Patrol the Movie: Adventure City Calls is a great experience for young players. By offering story missions full of playful adventure, fun and accessible mini games, and a wealth of additional mini games to enjoy outside of the story and full local co-op support, the experience can be enjoyed by children with their friends, siblings, and parents. The brief runtime of each game mode or mission makes it very friendly for brief game sessions.

As a father to three and four-year-old sons I can comfortably say we had a great time playing this together and I would be lying if I said the PAW Patrol titles aren’t a guilty pleasure of mine. By providing an experience that can be enjoyed by players of all ages, PAW Patrol the Movie: Adventure City Calls is a great addition to the family friendly space dominated by publisher Outright Games.
